Square Reggio Emilia –
The Reggiane to listen to

On October 2 and 3, 2026 , at 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM , Officine Meccaniche Reggiane will host “ Square Reggio Emilia ,” an interactive sound installation conceived and composed by Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch . This site-specific, immersive experience was created for Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, one of Italy's largest industrial complexes.
Square is a 360-degree binaural soundwalk to be experienced through headphones. As you walk through the site's spaces, voices, noises, and composed sound material surround the listener as if emanating from the places themselves. The boundary between what you hear in your headphones and what's actually happening around you becomes blurred, and the real intertwines with the possible.
The work stems from the research "Proxemic Fields," conducted at IRCAM in Paris , and from interviews and field recordings. Bianchi Hoesch collected testimonies from those who lived or worked at Reggiane (workers, squatters, writers, social workers) and those who currently inhabit the site as it undergoes regeneration. These memories become a sonic and poetic flow, constructed through montage rather than linear narration.
The route traverses a space where areas of redevelopment and repurposing for production and education coexist with areas of industrial archaeology: places of production, employment, and contemporary regeneration. Reggiane has been inhabited by a succession of very different communities, each capable of inhabiting and reorganizing the space in their own way, and Square makes this stratification audible.
